The Effect of Perfusion Flow Rate and Adrenergic Stimulation on Oxygen Transfer in the Isolated, Saline-perfused Head of Rainbow Trout (salmo Gairdneri)

چکیده

An isolated, saline-perfused trout head preparation, irrigated with hyperoxic water (PWQ2 = 250 Torr), was used to assess diffusion/perfusion limitations to gill oxygen transfer. In the absence of catecholamines, increasing the perfusion flow rate caused a reduction of the partial pressure of oxygen in the dorsal aortic perfusate, indicating diffusion limitations to oxygen uptake. Physiological concentrations of epinephrine stimulated oxygen uptake in a dose-dependent fashion. Moreover, epinephrine elicited a greater effect during increased perfusion flow rate as a result of larger initial diffusion limitations, caused by the increased flow. By using a variety of adrenergic agonists and antagonists, it was demonstrated that beta-receptor stimulation enhanced oxygen uptake whereas alpha-receptor stimulation had no effect. These results are discussed with reference to changes in gill epithelial permeability to oxygen and/or surface area changes.

The pattern of carbon dioxide excretion in the rainbow trout Salmo gairdneri.

1. Patterns of carbon dioxide excretion were investigated in rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri). 2. The loss of erythrocytic carbonic anhydrase caused by severe anaemia does not affect acid/base regulation or the ability of fish to excrete CO2. 3. Bicarbonate excretion across the saline-perfused gills of trout is significant even though residence time for the saline in the gills is only 1--3 s. CO...

The effect of increased metabolic rate on renal function in the rainbow trout, Salmo Gairdneri.

1. A highly significant linear correlation was found between glomerular filtration rate and urine flow rate in both freshwater and seawater trout. The percentage tubular reabsorption of water was approximately 33% greater in seawater trout than in freshwater trout. 2. As oxygen consumption increased, the urine flow rate increased in freshwater and seawater rainbow trout. The proportional increa...

Studies on the glomerular filtration rate of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri).

The rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) and its anadromous form, the steelhead trout, maintain their milieu intbrieur hypotonic to the environment after transfer to sea water (Houston, 1959, i960). Such a transfer involves the physiological adjustment from a condition of continual hydration and electrolyte depletion to the opposite circumstance of a sustained tendency towards dehydration and excess...

Coronary flow in a perfused rainbow trout heart.

A preparation was developed to perfuse the coronary circulation in working hearts from rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri Richardson). The preparation was used to examine pressure-flow relationships for the coronary circulation as the heart generated physiological and subphysiological work loads. Coronary vascular resistance increased exponentially as coronary flow rate decreased. Coronary resistan...
